What cremation really costs
The price depends far more on what happens before the cremation than on the cremation itself.
Direct cremation, with no viewing or service, is posted at about $1,500 to $2,050 around South Bend. A funeral with a viewing followed by cremation is a different thing: the national median is $6,280, and one Mishawaka funeral home lists it at $6,620.
| Choice | What happens | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Direct cremation | Pickup, the required paperwork, a simple container, the cremation, and the ashes returned. No embalming, viewing or service. | About $1,500–$2,050 locally |
| Cremation with a memorial service | Direct cremation, plus a gathering at the funeral home without the body present. | $3,295 at one Mishawaka home |

Costs that are often extra
- Death certificates: $20 each from the St. Joseph County Health Department. How to order
- An urn: the ashes come back in a simple container. A decorative urn is your choice, and the funeral home has to accept one you buy elsewhere.
- Extra days of refrigeration, a heavier person, or pickup from far away.
- What happens to the ashes next: burying them in a cemetery, or scattering them, which can cost nothing.
Your rights when you shop
Under the FTC's Funeral Rule, a funeral home:
- Must give you prices over the phone, without asking for your name first.
- Must give you a written, itemized price list to keep when you visit.
- Can't tell you a casket is required for cremation. No state or local law requires one, and if it offers direct cremation it must offer a simple alternative container.
- Can't refuse an urn or casket you bought somewhere else, or charge you a fee for using it.
Indiana rules that affect timing
- The 48-hour wait. Indiana law says a cremation can't happen until 48 hours after the time of death, unless the local health officer waives that in writing. Funeral homes here commonly build it in.
- Who signs. The cremation has to be authorized in writing. The law sets the order: a person the deceased named in writing, then the spouse, then adult children (a majority), then parents, then siblings.
- Paperwork. The crematory needs the death certificate (or a coroner's release if the coroner investigated) and a permit from the local health officer. The funeral home handles this.
Ways families save
- Call two or three funeral homes and compare their direct cremation price, line by line.
- Skip embalming if there's no viewing. It's not required for direct cremation.
- Hold your own memorial later, at home, a church, or a park, instead of at the funeral home.
- If there's no money, ask your township trustee's office before signing anything. Indiana townships can help with a simple funeral.
