Burying ashes in a grave you already own
Many families bury a parent's ashes with a spouse who's already buried, often after keeping the ashes at home for a while. Most cemeteries allow one or more urns in an existing grave. Ask the cemetery:
- How many urns can go in this grave?
- Is an urn vault required, and what size fits?
- What is the opening and closing charge for an urn?
- Who has to sign? Usually it's the person who holds the rights to the grave.
Ways families save money
- Ask for the cemetery's written price list before you agree to anything.
- Compare the vault price at the funeral home with buying one yourself. A funeral home can't refuse one you bought elsewhere. Your rights
- If the cemetery doesn't require a vault, you don't need one.
- Ask whether weekday burials cost less. Some cemeteries charge more for weekends and late afternoons.
